CIS 22:2021 Safe Use of Scaffolding in Construction

CIS 22:2021 is a Construction Industry Standard that provides guidance on the safe use of scaffolding in construction. The standard covers the following topics:

  • Scaffold design and construction: This section provides requirements for the design and construction of scaffolding, including the selection of materials, the erection of the scaffold, and the use of fall protection.
  • Scaffold inspection and maintenance: This section provides requirements for the inspection and maintenance of scaffolding, including the frequency of inspections and the responsibilities of the various parties involved in the inspection and maintenance process.
  • Scaffold safety: This section provides general safety requirements for the use of scaffolding, including the use of personal protective equipment, the prevention of falls, and the avoidance of hazards.

The standard also includes a number of annexes that provide additional information on specific topics, such as the use of scaffolding in windy conditions and the use of scaffolding near power lines.

CIS 22:2021 is an important resource for anyone involved in the construction industry. By following the requirements of the standard, you can help to ensure the safe use of scaffolding and prevent accidents and injuries.

Here are some key points from the standard:

  • Scaffolds must be designed and constructed to withstand the loads that they will be subjected to.
  • Scaffolds must be inspected regularly and maintained in good condition.
  • Workers must use personal protective equipment when working on scaffolding.
  • Fall protection must be provided when working at heights greater than 6 feet.
  • Scaffolds must be kept clear of debris and other hazards.

By following these guidelines, you can help to ensure the safe use of scaffolding and prevent accidents and injuries. There a few type scaffolding :

1. Prefabricated scaffold (Steel Frame Scaffolding System)

2. Tubular Scaffold (Tubes and Coupler/ Fittings System)

3. Prefabricated Scaffold (Modular Scaffolding System)

A modular scaffolding system shall be designed according to MS 1462-3-1, MS 1462-3-2 and MS 1462-4-1. The material is either steel or aluminium of outside diameter of 48.3mm with thickness and dimensional tolerance of tubes as given in Table 410.

In section 4.2 also mention the manufacturer, supplier, contractor or owner shall be responsible to obtain ‘Perakuan Pematuhan Standard’ (PPS) by providing a valid product certification, test report (for new or used scaffolding) and other valid documents required by CIDB.
